Lament

“Wherefore it is as foolish to lament that we shall not be alive a hundred years from now as it is to lament that we were not alive a hundred years ago.” - Montaigne

Wherefore we do not mourn the time
Before we were born,
The truth is
Unlike then
Now we know what we will miss—
The warm sun,
the rustling trees,
A soft rain;
A startled doe,
The song of a thrush,
The love of a good dog;
A hand to hold.

And we do, indeed, lament.
- Patricia Thrushart
